How international school fees in Malaysia are structured

An international school fee schedule in Malaysia has five parts: an application fee, a one-off registration (or enrolment) fee, a refundable deposit, tuition that rises with the year group, and other compulsory charges. On the schedules of 23 schools we read, the one-off fees alone range from under RM 3,000 to more than RM 60,000, so two schools with similar tuition can have very different first-year bills.

The examples in the table are quoted from the schools’ own 2026/27 schedules unless a different year is shown. They illustrate the spread; they are not a full list for every school.

Service tax (SST) on international school fees

A 6% service tax applies to private preschool, primary and secondary education where annual tuition fees exceed RM 60,000 per student. Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance set this out in its statement on the expanded Sales and Service Tax scope, with an exemption for Malaysian citizens with disabilities (OKU). The schools’ own fee notices give 1 July 2025 as the start date and state that it applies to students of every nationality.

In practice the schools we checked add 6% to the whole taxable fee once a student is over the threshold, not just to the part above RM 60,000: Mont’Kiara International School, for example, lists RM 2,598.66 of SST on a RM 43,311 kindergarten semester fee. Schools also state that application and registration fees for new students are taxed, and two (Alice Smith and Uplands) give 1 September 2025 as their start date. Year groups below the threshold are not taxed, which is why the same school can be tax-free in primary and taxed in secondary. Published fees are almost always quoted before SST, so ask each school for a tax-inclusive quotation.

International school fees Malaysia: verified table by school

The table lists 23 schools on SailEdu whose official fee schedule we read directly, sorted from the lowest published starting fee. The first figure is the youngest year group and the second is the most expensive year group, for a day student, before SST.

This is a list of published numbers, not a ranking of quality, and a lower fee does not mean a weaker school. The academic year matters too: most schedules are for 2026/27, but two schools run a January-to-December year and one school’s latest published schedule is 2025/26.

International school Kuala Lumpur fees

International school Kuala Lumpur fees on the six schedules we verified run from RM 19,830 a year (Nursery at Taylor’s International School Kuala Lumpur, 2027) to RM 143,400 a year (Grades 9–12 at ISKL, 2026/27). Kuala Lumpur has the widest spread in the country because it holds both the long-established expatriate schools and newer group-owned schools.

The upper end is four long-established schools: Garden International School and Mont’Kiara International School in Mont Kiara, ISKL in Ampang Hilir, and The Alice Smith School (whose secondary campus is in Seri Kembangan) all reach RM 120,000 or more in the senior years. Taylor’s International School Kuala Lumpur and UCSI International School Kuala Lumpur publish schedules that stay under RM 60,000 through Year 11, which also keeps them below the service-tax threshold.

International school Selangor fees: Petaling Jaya, Subang, Puchong, Cyberjaya, Shah Alam

Verified international school fees in Selangor and Putrajaya run from RM 12,750 a year (Early Years at UCSI International School Subang Jaya, 2025/26) to RM 118,200 a year (Grades 11–12 at IGB International School, 2026/27). Selangor is where most of the mid-priced schools are: seven of the ten schedules we verified here start below RM 32,000 a year.

Shortlist by township rather than by state. Traffic between Petaling Jaya, Subang, Puchong, Shah Alam and Cyberjaya can turn a short distance into a long school run, and most schools charge separately for the bus.

International school Petaling Jaya

The British International School of Kuala Lumpur (Bandar Utama), St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia and Sri KDU International School Kota Damansara are on SailEdu; we did not verify their schedules, so fees are on request. International school Johor fees

Verified international school fees in Johor run from RM 13,760 a year (Early Years at REAL International School Johor Bahru) to RM 166,800 a year (sixth form day pupils at Marlborough College Malaysia), both for 2026/27. Johor has the widest gap between schools of any state in this guide.

The premium schools sit in Iskandar, close to Singapore. Marlborough College Malaysia charges RM 63,000–166,800 for day pupils and RM 203,700–259,800 for full boarders including tuition. Raffles American School publishes RM 40,500–106,500 with meals included, plus RM 47,000–62,000 a year for boarding. REAL International School Johor Bahru in Permas Jaya stays between RM 13,760 and RM 30,210 through Year 11; its one-off fees differ for Malaysian and international students.

International school Penang fees

Verified international school fees in Penang run from RM 16,500 a year (Nursery for Malaysian pupils at Stonyhurst International School Penang) to RM 74,400 a year (IB Diploma years at Uplands), both for 2026/27. None of the three Penang schedules we verified goes above RM 75,000 for day tuition.

Stonyhurst publishes separate schedules for Malaysian pupils (RM 16,500–59,850) and non-Malaysian pupils (RM 21,600–71,250), so check which one applies to you. Dalat International School charges RM 22,000–59,000 for an American programme, and Uplands RM 26,000–74,400 for IGCSE followed by the IB Diploma. Prince of Wales Island International School publishes its schedule as a document we could not read reliably, so we list it as fees on request.

International school first-year cost in Malaysia: a worked example

A new Year 7 day student at Nexus International School Malaysia would pay about RM 135,520 in the first year before tax on the school’s 2026/27 schedule, of which RM 28,180 is a refundable deposit. With 6% SST the figure is about RM 141,960. That is roughly 1.6 times the RM 86,040 annual fee, which is the gap most families underestimate.

We built this example from one published schedule only, so every line can be checked against the source. It is an illustration of how the parts add up, not a quotation.

Affordable international schools in Malaysia: choosing on a budget

Affordable international schools in Malaysia do exist, but an international school under RM 30,000 a year for the whole journey is rare: of the schedules of 23 schools we verified, only UCSI International School Subang Jaya (2025/26) stays below RM 30,000 through Year 11, and REAL International School Johor Bahru stays below it through Year 9. More often, fees start under RM 30,000 in the early years and pass that line in primary.

We do not label any school "cheap" or put schools into budget bands. Fees depend on the year group, and the cheapest international school in Malaysia for a four-year-old is not the cheapest for a fifteen-year-old. The table shows which year groups fall under RM 30,000 on each published schedule.

Derived from the same verified schedules as the main table; 2026/27 unless shown. Tuition only, before one-off fees and other compulsory charges. A year group missing from this table costs RM 30,000 or more on the published schedule.

Price the whole journey, not the entry year

Read the schedule to the year your child will leave. At King Henry VIII College, tuition is RM 27,400 in Year 2 and RM 64,000 in Year 3; at many schools the step into secondary is the largest.

Add the one-off fees to year one

Registration fees on the schedules we read range from RM 2,000 to RM 59,000. Divide the one-off cost by the number of years you expect to stay to compare schools fairly.

Watch the RM 60,000 line

Once annual fees pass RM 60,000, 6% service tax applies. A year group priced at RM 59,000 and one at RM 62,000 are further apart than they look.

Check what tuition includes

Some schedules bundle books, exam fees or meals; others bill technology, development funds and exams separately. Raffles American School includes meals; the Australian International School Malaysia says its fees cover textbooks and exam fees.

Ask about discounts you qualify for

Sibling discounts, early-payment rebates of around 3–5% for paying the year in advance, and registration-fee waivers for transfers from other international schools all appear on the schedules we read. They are not automatic; ask.

Decide the exit qualification early

Several lower-fee schools stop at IGCSE in Year 11. If you want A-Level or the IB Diploma at the same school, check that it offers Years 12–13 and what those years cost.

For curricula and admission steps, read International Schools in Malaysia 2026; for IGCSE and A-Level schools and boarding, read British International School Malaysia 2026; and for families relocating to Malaysia, read International Schools in Malaysia for MM2H and Relocating Families.

Admission age and typical entry points

Most international schools in Malaysia take children from age 3 or 4 and run to age 16 (IGCSE) or 18 (A-Level, IB Diploma or a high-school diploma). The main entry points are the first early-years class, Year 1 or Grade 1, the start of secondary, the start of the IGCSE course and the start of sixth form, but schools admit into any year group where there is a place.

The year group is set by date of birth, and the cut-off differs by school. Taylor’s International School places children by the age they turn in the calendar year (Year 1 at 6), while Sri KDU International School Subang Jaya lists Year 1 as ages 5–6. A child can therefore be offered a different year group at two schools, and a different fee. Ask each school which year your child would enter before comparing prices.

Entry pointTypical ageWhat to check
Early years (Nursery, Reception, Pre-K, Kindergarten)3–5Lowest fees and often a lower registration fee, with a top-up when the child moves into Year 1. Half-day options at some schools.
Year 1 / Grade 15–7Full registration fee usually applies from here. Tuition typically steps up from early years.
Start of secondary (Year 7 / Grade 6)11–12Often the largest fee step; many schools pass RM 60,000 and SST begins. Boarding usually opens around this age.
Start of IGCSE (Year 10)14–15IGCSE is a two-year course, so schools prefer entry at the start of Year 10 rather than Year 11. External exam fees are billed separately.
Sixth form (Year 12 / Grade 11)16–17A-Level, IB Diploma or equivalent. Entry usually depends on IGCSE or equivalent results; some schools reduce or waive the registration fee for direct entry.

Ages are typical, not rules. British and Australian schools number Year 1–13 or Year 1–12; American and IB schools use Kindergarten and Grade 1–12. Confirm placement, English-language requirements and available places with each school.

IGCSE, A-Level and the IB Diploma lead on to university. A-Level is accepted for degree entry at Malaysian universities such as University of Malaya (UM), Monash University Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) — check the grades each degree asks for. When the time comes you can compare universities and look for scholarships.
