Masters in Malaysia: types and duration

Malaysian universities offer three Master's modes: coursework, mixed mode and research. Under the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) standards, a coursework or mixed-mode Master's needs at least 40 credits and a minimum of 1 year full-time (2 years part-time), while a research Master's typically takes 2 years full-time (3 years part-time). All three lead to a Master's degree at the same qualifications level; they differ in how you are assessed.

ModeHow it worksTypical full-time durationBest for
CourseworkTaught modules plus a project paper; must include a research methodology course. Minimum 40 credits.1-2 years (MQA minimum: 1 year)Career changers and professionals who want structured classes, including most MBA programmes
Mixed modeCoursework plus a dissertation, in a ratio of 50:50, 40:60 or 30:70. Minimum 40 credits.1-2 years (MQA minimum: 1 year)Students who want taught foundations and a real research component
ResearchA supervised research project and a thesis that is examined; a research methodology course is required.About 2 yearsStudents aiming for a PhD or a research career; you usually need a supervisor's agreement before applying

Durations are the national minimum or typical figures from the MQA Standards for Master's and Doctoral Degrees. Each university sets its own maximum study period, so check the programme page for the exact length and number of semesters.

Masters in Malaysia for international students: entry requirements

The national minimum is a bachelor's degree in a related field with a CGPA of 2.50 for a coursework Master's and 2.75 for a mixed-mode or research Master's. These are floors set by the MQA; individual universities, especially the highly ranked public ones, often ask for more, so always read the requirements on the programme page.

Bachelor's degree and CGPA

Coursework Master's: CGPA 2.50 or equivalent, or 2.00-2.49 subject to a rigorous internal assessment. Mixed mode and research: CGPA 2.75, or 2.50-2.74 with internal assessment, or 2.00-2.49 with at least 5 years of relevant work experience plus assessment. If your degree is in an unrelated field, expect prerequisite courses.

English proficiency

There is no single national score. Private universities commonly ask for IELTS 5.5-6.5 and public universities IELTS 6.0-7.0, with law, education and language programmes at the higher end. Some universities accept TOEFL, PTE or a letter confirming your previous degree was taught in English. Confirm the accepted tests and scores with the university.

Work experience for an MBA

Many MBA programmes in Malaysia admit fresh graduates who meet the CGPA requirement. As one published example, UOW Malaysia asks for a bachelor's degree with CGPA 2.50, or a lower CGPA with at least 5 years of relevant work experience. Executive-style MBAs usually expect several years of managerial experience. Requirements vary by school, so check each one.

Research proposal and supervisor

For a research Master's or PhD you normally submit a research proposal, and many faculties expect you to identify a potential supervisor before or during the application. A proposal that matches a supervisor's active research area is the strongest part of a research application.

Documents

Degree certificate and full transcripts (with certified English translations if needed), English test result, passport, CV, and usually two referee letters. MBA applicants should add employment letters. Chinese applicants should keep the original degree and graduation certificates ready for verification.

CGPA thresholds above are MQA minimum standards (Version 3, June 2021). English ranges repeat the figures used across Sail Edu guides and are typical, not guaranteed.

Master's, MBA in Malaysia and PhD fees

Total tuition for international students is about RM 25,000-62,000 for a Master's at a public university and RM 30,000-100,000 at a private university, with an MBA at roughly RM 50,000-85,000 and a PhD at about RM 50,000-105,000 for the minimum 3 years. The table shows whole-programme tuition, not annual fees, drawn from published 2025/2026 and 2026 fee schedules of sample universities.

Sources: Universiti Malaya international postgraduate fee structure 2025/2026 (non-clinical programmes); UKM international postgraduate fee schedule; UTP, UOW Malaysia, Sunway University and Taylor's University published fees. Clinical medical and dental specialist programmes cost far more and are excluded. Conversions are rounded at about RM 4.2 = USD 1. Fees change every year; confirm the current figure with the university before paying anything.

  • Service tax: since 1 July 2025 a 6% service tax applies to fees charged to international students at many institutions, and most published fee tables exclude it.
  • Extra semesters cost extra. Published totals assume you finish in the minimum period; research students who overrun pay per additional semester.
  • EMGS visa, medical screening and insurance are charged separately from tuition. See our EMGS guide for typical amounts.
  • Living costs for a single student in shared housing run about USD 335-850 per month depending on the region, with Kuala Lumpur and Selangor at the top.
  • Looking for the cheapest route? Public universities are the lowest-cost tier. Published examples include a Master of Arts at Universiti Malaya from RM 25,000 in total and a research PhD at UKM's Faculty of Information Science and Technology at RM 52,590 for 6 semesters.

Degree recognition: MQA accreditation and China's CSCSE verification

A Malaysian postgraduate degree is only as useful as its recognition where you plan to work. In Malaysia, check that the programme is accredited by the MQA. If you will return to China, the degree must pass verification by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE, 教育部留学服务中心), and you should check the Ministry of Education's 教育涉外监管信息网 (jsj.moe.gov.cn) list for your specific university before you accept an offer.

  1. 1

Check the programme is MQA accredited

Search the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) for the exact programme title and awarding institution. Provisional accreditation is normal for new programmes; full accreditation is what employers and other regulators look for.

  2. 2

Check the official list for your home country

For China, look up the university by name on the Ministry of Education's 教育涉外监管信息网 at jsj.moe.gov.cn. Do this yourself for the specific institution and campus; do not rely on an agent's word or on an old screenshot.

  3. 3

Graduate and receive the formal degree certificate

CSCSE verification is applied for after you hold the official degree certificate. A completion letter is generally not enough.

  4. 4

    Apply online to the CSCSE

Submit the application through the CSCSE service portal (zwfw.cscse.edu.cn). The portal lists the degree certificate, passport, visa or residence records, an ID photo and a signed authorisation statement among the required materials, and no paper documents need to be handed in on site.

  5. 5

    Wait for the result

The CSCSE portal states a processing time of 10-20 working days. The outcome is an electronic verification certificate that employers can check online.

What can stop a degree from being verified

  • Being on a list is not a guarantee. The CSCSE assesses each application individually, and a university's status can change, so re-check close to enrolment and again before graduation.
  • Your study record must match the programme. Entry and exit records are compared with the official study period, so long absences from Malaysia during a full-time programme can raise questions.
  • Mode of study matters. Degrees earned mainly through distance or online learning are generally outside the scope of CSCSE verification; confirm the current rule with the CSCSE before choosing an online (ODL) programme.
  • Sail Edu cannot promise recognition for any university. The official lists and the CSCSE decision are the only authority.

PhD in Malaysia: structure, how many years and how hard it is

A PhD in Malaysia typically takes 3 years full-time and 4 years part-time according to the MQA standard, and that is a typical minimum rather than a promise. Most PhDs are by research: there is little or no coursework beyond a research methodology requirement, and you graduate by producing an original thesis and defending it in an oral examination (viva voce).

  • Entry: a Master's degree in a related field accepted by the university. A first-class bachelor's degree (CGPA 3.67 or higher) can be admitted directly, subject to internal assessment.
  • Fast track: a research Master's student can apply to convert to the PhD within the first year of full-time study, with Senate approval.
  • Modes: PhD by research is the norm. Some universities also offer mixed-mode or coursework doctorates (minimum 80 credits) and professional doctorates such as the DBA.
  • Milestones: research proposal defence in the first year, periodic progress reviews, thesis submission, viva voce, then corrections.
  • Cost: about RM 50,000-105,000 in total tuition at public universities for the minimum period, before living costs and any extra semesters.

How hard is it to finish, honestly?

Getting admitted to a PhD in Malaysia is usually easier than finishing one. Admission mostly depends on a relevant Master's degree, a workable proposal and a willing supervisor. Graduating depends on producing publishable original research, and many full-time candidates need longer than 3 years, with 4 years or more being common. A Malaysian PhD is not a shortcut: the thesis is examined by internal and external examiners, and a weak thesis is sent back for major corrections or fails. These are the factors that decide how long you take.

Supervisor fit and availability

This is the single biggest factor. A supervisor who works in your topic, answers drafts promptly and has graduated students before will shorten your timeline. Talk to their current students before you commit.

Publication requirements

Many universities require journal or indexed conference publications before you may submit your thesis, and journal review alone can take many months. Ask the faculty for its exact graduation requirement in writing before you enrol.

Research design and data

Lab access, equipment queues, fieldwork permits, ethics approval and data collection routinely take longer than planned. A realistic, well-scoped proposal saves a year.

Academic writing in English

The thesis is normally written and defended in English. Candidates who write slowly in English should budget extra time and use the university's writing support from the first semester.

Funding and time

Fee schedules assume the minimum period. Running out of money, or working long hours outside the research, is a common reason candidates stall. Part-time candidates typically need 4 years or more.

Postgraduate scholarships: Masters and PhD in Malaysia with scholarship

Fully funded places exist but are competitive; most international postgraduates rely on partial tuition waivers or a research assistantship. The main government scheme is the Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), which pays full tuition plus RM 1,500 per month for full-time Master's and PhD study.

Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS)

Run by the Ministry of Higher Education. The 2026 guidelines cover full-time Master's and PhD study at 20 public universities and 4 private institutions (UTP, UNITEN, MMU, INCEIF), paying tuition directly to the university plus a living allowance of RM 1,500 per month. Eligibility: citizens of listed recipient countries (the 2026 list includes ASEAN, Commonwealth countries, China and others), not older than 40 for a Master's or 45 for a PhD, CGPA 3.00 or second class upper, and IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. Research applicants submit a proposal of at least 1,000 words. The 2026/2027 call ran from 4 March to 3 April 2026; check the MOHE portal for the next cycle.

University scholarships

Named schemes already listed in our guides include the UPM International Postgraduate Scholarship, the UKM Tunku Abdul Rahman International Scholarship and the Monash Malaysia International Merit Scholarship. Amounts, eligible programmes and deadlines change by intake, so read the current terms on each university's site.

Research assistantships

For a research Master's or PhD, the most common funding is a graduate research assistant post paid from your supervisor's grant, sometimes with a tuition waiver. Availability depends entirely on the supervisor's funding, so ask about it when you first make contact.

Home-country and foreign-government schemes

Check your own government's overseas study funding and employer sponsorship as well. The big foreign-government awards such as Chevening, Australia Awards and Fulbright fund study in their own countries, not in Malaysia.

Part-time and online options, including MBA in Malaysia part time

Part-time study is widely offered: the MQA minimum is 2 years for a part-time coursework Master's, about 3 years for a part-time research Master's and about 4 years for a part-time PhD. The catch for international students is the visa. A Student Pass is generally issued for full-time study, so part-time and online modes mainly suit people who already hold another valid pass in Malaysia or who study from their home country.

  • Part-time MBA: usually evening or weekend classes over about 2 years. UOW Malaysia, for example, lists 2 years part-time against 1 year 4 months full-time.
  • Online (ODL) programmes: open and distance learning Master's and MBA programmes can be studied from abroad without a Student Pass, often at a lower fee. UOW Malaysia lists its ODL MBA at about RM 30,380 for international students.
  • Scholarships: MIS and most university scholarships fund full-time study only.
  • Recognition: if you plan to use the degree in China, check with the CSCSE first, because degrees earned mainly by distance learning are generally outside the scope of verification.
  • Working while studying: full-time Student Pass holders are generally limited to 20 hours of part-time work per week during term breaks and holidays, so do not plan to fund a full-time Master's from local work.

How to apply for a Masters, MBA or PhD in Malaysia

Apply 6 to 9 months before your intended intake: allow time for the academic decision, then at least three months for the student visa. Coursework programmes usually have fixed intakes, while many research programmes accept applications throughout the year; confirm dates with each university.

  1. 1

    Choose your mode and shortlist

Decide between coursework, mixed mode and research, then shortlist 3 to 5 programmes by field, fee, city and ranking. You can compare universities and programmes on Sail Edu for free.

  2. 2

    Check requirements and recognition

Confirm the CGPA, English score and any work-experience requirement on the programme page, that the programme is MQA accredited, and that the university is on your home country's recognised list.

  3. 3

    Prepare documents

Degree certificate, transcripts, English test result, passport, CV and referee letters. Research applicants add a proposal and, ideally, written interest from a supervisor. MBA applicants add employment letters.

  4. 4

    Submit the online application

Apply through the university's postgraduate portal or through Sail Edu's online application with its document vault. Some universities charge an application processing fee.

  5. 5

Accept the offer and pay the deposit

Check the offer letter for programme name, mode, duration and fee schedule before accepting. Pay only to the university's official account.

  6. 6

    Student visa through EMGS

Your university submits the EMGS application for you. The eVAL typically takes around 14 working days once a complete application is in, and the whole visa process usually takes 4 to 8 weeks.

  7. 7

    Arrive and register

Enter Malaysia, complete the medical screening within 14 days of arrival, hand in your passport for the Student Pass endorsement, and register for your first semester.
