Malaysia University Intake 2026 & 2027: Dates & Deadlines
Malaysia university intake 2026 and 2027 planning comes down to one fact: most universities here do not have a single September start. Private universities and foreign branch campuses open several intakes a year, public universities open two, and foundation and diploma intakes follow exam results. This guide from Sail Edu lists Malaysia university intake dates by institution type and by university, the published application deadlines, and a backward plan from your intake month to the day you should apply.
Quick answer
Most Malaysian private universities and branch campuses take new students 2 to 5 times a year, commonly in January–March, April–July and August–October. Public universities run a main September/October intake and a smaller February/March one. International students should apply 3 to 4 months before the intake to leave time for the EMGS student visa.

How Malaysia university intakes work
Malaysia has no single national start date. Each university sets its own intakes, and the number depends on the type of institution: private universities typically run 3 or more intakes a year, foreign branch campuses 1 to 3, and public universities 2. An intake is simply the month a new cohort starts classes.
- Private universities usually open three main intakes, commonly January/February, April/May and August/September. Some add June, July or October starts.
- Foreign branch campuses follow a simpler calendar. Some admit undergraduates only once a year in September, others two or three times a year.
- Public universities run two semesters. Semester 1 starts in September or October and is the main intake; Semester 2 starts in February or March and offers fewer programmes.
- Foundation, pre-university and diploma intakes follow school results. SPM results are released around March, so April and May intakes are popular; IGCSE and A-Level results arrive in August and January.
- Not every programme opens in every intake. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and some engineering programmes often start only once or twice a year, so check the intake at programme level.
- An intake date is not a deadline. International students need time for the offer and the EMGS student visa, so the real cut-off is weeks before classes start.
Malaysia university intake months by institution type
The typical Malaysia university intake months are January–March, April–July and August–October, with the pattern set by institution type. Use this table to narrow down which months to check, then confirm the exact date for your programme.
| Institution or level | Typical intake months | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Public universities (international students) | September/October (main); February/March | Two semesters a year. The second intake has fewer programmes, and applications close months before classes start. |
| Public universities (Malaysians, via UPU) | September/October | One main cycle a year through UPUOnline, with applications opening early in the year. |
| Private universities | January/February, April/May, August/September | Typically three main intakes; some add June, July or October. Applications are usually rolling. |
| Foreign branch campuses | February/March, July, September/October | One to three intakes a year depending on the campus and level. |
| Foundation and pre-university | January/February, April/May, July–September | April and May intakes follow SPM results; July to September intakes suit IGCSE and international school leavers. |
| Diploma | January, April–June, August–October | Follows the same calendar as the university or college offering it. |
| Postgraduate taught (Master’s) | Two or three intakes, often January/February, May and September | Varies widely by programme. |
| Postgraduate research (PhD) | Several entry points a year | Depends on supervisor availability; confirm with the faculty. |
These are typical patterns, not fixed dates. Each university publishes its own calendar and can change it from year to year. Always confirm the intake for your exact programme with the university before you plan travel.
Malaysia university intake dates by university
Intake months differ a lot between universities: from one undergraduate intake a year at some branch campuses to five at some private universities. The table lists 12 well-known universities with intake months taken from each university’s own website.
| University | Type | Published intake months |
|---|---|---|
| Universiti Malaya (UM) | Public | October (Semester I) and March (Semester II) for international undergraduate and postgraduate applicants |
| Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) | Public | March and October for UKM International (UKMi) bachelor’s programmes |
| Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) | Public | September and February (two semesters a year) |
| Monash University Malaysia | Branch campus | February and July (major intakes); October (minor intake, some courses only) |
| University of Nottingham Malaysia | Branch campus | Undergraduate: September only. Foundation: April and September. Postgraduate: September, plus February, April and June for selected programmes |
| Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) | Branch campus | Undergraduate: February, April and September. Foundation: April, August and December |
| Heriot-Watt University Malaysia | Branch campus | Undergraduate: January and September. Foundation: January, May, July and September |
| Taylor’s University | Private | Foundation: February, April and August. Diploma: April and August. Degrees vary by programme, for example February, April and September for law |
| Sunway University | Private | 2027 diploma and undergraduate intakes: February, May and September |
| UCSI University | Private | Foundation: January, May and September. Many degree programmes follow the same three months |
| UOW Malaysia | Private | Foundation, diploma and bachelor’s degree in 2026: January, April, June, September and October |
| Asia Pacific University (APU) | Private | Several intakes a year by level; its calendar lists September and November 2026 starts for foundation, diploma and degree |
Intake months were checked on each university’s official website on 10 October 2026. Several universities had not yet published a full 2027 calendar; where only 2026 months were available, the 2027 pattern is likely similar but not confirmed. Individual programmes may not open in every intake.
To check a specific programme, browse Malaysian universities on Sail Edu and compare them side by side, then see which scholarships are open for your intake, because scholarship deadlines often fall earlier than admission deadlines.
Malaysia university intake 2026 and 2027 deadlines
There is no single Malaysia university application deadline for 2026 or 2027. Public universities publish fixed closing dates, often 1 to 2 months before classes start. Most private universities accept applications on a rolling basis, so the practical deadline for international students is set by the student visa: apply at least 3 months ahead.
| University and applicant | Intake | Application window |
|---|---|---|
| Universiti Malaya, international undergraduate | Semester II, March 2027 | Opened 7 September 2026; closes 30 January 2027 |
| Universiti Malaya, international postgraduate | Semester II, March 2027 | Opened 7 September 2026; closes 30 January 2027 |
| Universiti Malaya, international undergraduate | Semester I, October 2026 | Ran 9 February to 30 August 2026 (closed; medicine closed 9 June 2026) |
| University of Nottingham Malaysia, international | September 2026 | Closed 31 July 2026 (Malaysian applicants: 18 September 2026) |
| University of Nottingham Malaysia, foundation, international | April 2026 | Closed 27 February 2026 (Malaysian applicants: 10 April 2026) |
| Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, international undergraduate | September and February | Results must be uploaded by 30 July for the September intake and 31 December for the February intake |
| Malaysian SPM leavers, public universities via UPU | Session 2026/2027 | Ran 29 January to 12 April 2026 (closed) |
| Most private universities, international | Any intake | Rolling; apply 2 to 4 months before classes start |
Dates are as published by each university or the Ministry of Higher Education and were checked on 10 October 2026. The 2026 dates that have passed are shown as a guide to the pattern; 2027 dates for the September/October intake had not been published for most universities. Entry requirements do not change between intakes, but closing dates do, so confirm on the university’s admissions page.
When to apply: working back from your intake
International students should submit applications 3 to 4 months before the intake. The EMGS student visa process takes roughly 4 to 8 weeks end to end, and the eVAL alone takes around 14 working days once a complete application is in, so work backwards from the first day of class.
- 1
5 to 6 months before: shortlist and test
Shortlist universities and programmes, confirm which intake your programme actually opens in, and book an English test if you need one. Check that your passport will stay valid well beyond your entry date.
- 2
3 to 4 months before: submit applications
Apply with your transcripts, certificates and passport copy. If your final results are not out yet, ask for a conditional offer based on forecast or interim results.
- 3
About 3 months before: accept the offer
Accept the offer and pay the deposit to confirm your place. Send the university your EMGS documents: passport pages, academic documents, photo to EMGS specification and the health declaration.
- 4
10 to 12 weeks before: EMGS submission
The university submits your EMGS application. For a complete application the eVAL (Electronic Visa Approval Letter) is typically issued in around 14 working days. Unclear scans are the most common cause of delay.
- 5
4 to 6 weeks before: entry visa
With the eVAL, apply for a Single Entry Visa at the Malaysian embassy or consulate in your country. Some nationalities can use Visa on Arrival with the eVAL; confirm with your university.
- 6
1 to 2 weeks before: travel
Book your flight to arrive before orientation. You must enter Malaysia within six months of the eVAL issuance date, so a deferred start is possible if plans slip.
- 7
First 14 days in Malaysia
Complete the medical screening at an EMGS-approved clinic and hand your passport to the university for the Student Pass endorsement within 14 days of arrival.
Apply-by guide for upcoming 2027 intakes
| Intake you want | Submit applications by | EMGS should start by |
|---|---|---|
| January 2027 | October 2026 (now) | Early November 2026 |
| February or March 2027 | November 2026 | December 2026 |
| April or May 2027 | January 2027 | February 2027 |
| July 2027 | March to April 2027 | May 2027 |
| September or October 2027 | May to June 2027 | July 2027 |
This table is a planning rule based on a 3-month lead time, not an official deadline. Where a university publishes an earlier closing date, that date wins. More detail: Malaysia student visa (EMGS) step-by-step guide · How to apply to a university in Malaysia
Timeline for Chinese students around Gaokao
Gaokao takes place in early June and results arrive in late June, which leaves about 10 weeks before a September intake. That is enough only if the application is already in. Students who start after results usually join a January to April intake instead.
September to December of the final school year
Decide on Malaysia, shortlist universities and take IELTS if the programme needs it. Apply for a passport early.
January to May
Submit applications with high-school transcripts and ask for a conditional offer. Prepare notarised and translated academic documents.
Early June
Sit Gaokao. Exam dates are set each year by the Ministry of Education of China.
Late June
Results are released by province. Send the score to the university the same week, convert the conditional offer to an unconditional one and pay the deposit.
July
The university submits the EMGS application. The eVAL typically takes around 14 working days for a complete file.
August
Apply for the Single Entry Visa with the eVAL and book the flight.
September or October
Arrive and register. Complete the medical screening and Student Pass endorsement within 14 days.
If you start after results
Target the next intakes instead: January to April at most private universities, February or April at Xiamen University Malaysia, February at Monash University Malaysia, or March at Universiti Malaya. A foundation programme is another route.
Gaokao acceptance and minimum scores vary by university and programme. See: Study in Malaysia from China guide
UPU application for public universities (local students)
Malaysian students apply to public universities through UPUOnline, the central system run by the Ministry of Higher Education, and there is one main cycle a year for the September/October intake. For the 2026/2027 session, applications ran from 29 January 2026 to 12 April 2026 for SPM leavers.
- SPM leavers (2026/2027 session): the closing date was extended from 23 March to 12 April 2026 after SPM results were scheduled for 31 March 2026.
- STPM and equivalent leavers (2026/2027 session): Phase 1 closed on 23 March 2026 and Phase 2 ran from 13 April to 15 May 2026.
- UPU application dates for the 2027/2028 session had not been announced when this guide was updated. Based on recent cycles, the portal typically opens in late January or February; do not rely on this until the Ministry confirms it.
- UPU covers Malaysian citizens only. International students apply directly to each public university instead.
- Private universities are outside UPU, so a private university offer can be held as a backup while waiting for UPU results.
Always take UPU application dates, updates and appeal instructions from the official portal: upu.mohe.gov.my
What to do if you miss an intake
Missing an intake in Malaysia usually costs 2 to 4 months, not a full year, because most private universities have another intake a few months later. The exceptions are once-a-year programmes and public universities, where the next chance may be a semester or a year away.
Move to the next intake
Ask the university to defer your offer to its next intake. Most private universities have one within 2 to 4 months. Confirm in writing whether your deposit and any scholarship carry over.
Ask about late registration
Some universities accept late arrivals shortly after classes begin, particularly when a visa is delayed. This is at the university’s discretion, so ask admissions before booking a flight.
Choose a university with a later start
Calendars differ. If you miss a September start, look at universities with October or November intakes, or at January and February intakes that are only a few months away.
Use the gap well
Use the extra months to raise your English score, finish document translation, or start a foundation or English programme that leads into the degree.
Check your eVAL validity
If your eVAL has already been issued, you must enter Malaysia within six months of its issuance date. Tell your university at once if your arrival will slip beyond that.
Missed UPU
Malaysian students who miss the UPU window should watch the official portal for any later phase or appeal process and consider private university intakes in the meantime.
Families planning further ahead for younger children can also compare international schools in Malaysia, whose main intakes are August/September and January.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Malaysia university intake for 2026?
By October 2026 the main Malaysia university intake 2026 dates have passed. The remaining 2026 starts are late-year intakes at some private universities and branch campuses, such as October and November. Most applicants should now plan for January to March 2027.
When is the Malaysia university intake for 2027?

What is the Malaysia university application deadline for 2026 and 2027?
There is no single deadline. Universiti Malaya closes international applications for its March 2027 semester on 30 January 2027. Most private universities take rolling applications, so international students should apply 2 to 4 months before the intake to allow for the student visa.
What are the Malaysia university intake 2026 requirements?
Entry requirements are set per programme and are the same for every intake: recognised academic results, English proficiency (commonly IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 for degree programmes) and a valid passport for international students. Only the closing dates differ between intakes.
When is the UPU application for 2026 and the UPU application date for 2027?
The UPU application for the 2026/2027 session ran from 29 January to 12 April 2026 for SPM leavers. The UPU application date for the 2027/2028 session had not been announced at the time of writing; check upu.mohe.gov.my.

How long does it take to apply to a Malaysian university?
Allow 3 to 4 months from application to arrival as an international student. The offer stage depends on the university, and the EMGS student visa takes roughly 4 to 8 weeks end to end, including around 14 working days for the eVAL.
Can I apply before my final exam results are out?
Usually yes. Many universities issue a conditional offer on forecast or interim results, which becomes unconditional once you submit the final results. Applying early this way is the safest route for a September intake.
