Universities in Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley: full list by area
The Klang Valley is Kuala Lumpur plus the surrounding towns of Selangor and the federal territory of Putrajaya, and it holds the largest cluster of universities in Malaysia. The table lists 17 universities and branch campuses by area: three of the five public research universities (UM, UKM and UPM), the best-known private universities, and four foreign branch campuses.
Only three of them are inside Kuala Lumpur city itself. Most universities in Selangor sit outside the city centre, up to about 45 minutes away by car, in purpose-built campus towns such as Bandar Sunway, Cyberjaya and Bangi, so "study in Kuala Lumpur" usually means living in one of these towns rather than downtown.

QS positions and tuition are the indicative figures already published in our Best Universities in Malaysia and Top Private Universities guides, for mainstream bachelor's programmes excluding medicine, dentistry and pharmacy; where we have not published a figure we say so rather than guess. MMU and UOW Malaysia also have campuses outside the Klang Valley, and their fee ranges cover all campuses. This is not every institution in the Klang Valley. INTI International University is in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, which is outside it. Fees change every intake: confirm on the official fee page.

Getting around Kuala Lumpur city
Kuala Lumpur has the densest rail network in Malaysia: LRT, MRT, monorail and KTM Komuter lines meet in the centre, and most students use a mix of rail, bus and e-hailing. Universiti Malaya is reached from the Universiti station on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line by bus or university shuttle. APU runs a free shuttle for its students between the campus and Bukit Jalil LRT station. For UCSI, check the university's visitor information for the current rail and shuttle options before choosing housing.
Universities in Subang Jaya, Sunway and Petaling Jaya
Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway, about 20 km south-west of Kuala Lumpur, are the densest private-university district in Malaysia: Taylor's, Sunway and Monash Malaysia are within a few kilometres of each other. Universities in Petaling Jaya, the older city next door, include SEGi University in Kota Damansara. This is suburban, campus-town living: malls, hospitals, condominiums and student residences built around the universities.

Kota Damansara, 47810 Petaling Jaya, Selangor · Private
A private university whose main campus is in Kota Damansara, in the north of Petaling Jaya. We have not published a fee range for SEGi, so check its official fee page for your programme.
Getting around Subang Jaya, Sunway and Petaling Jaya
Bandar Sunway is served by the BRT Sunway Line, an elevated bus line. Sunway University and Monash share the SunU-Monash BRT station, and the BRT connects to the LRT Kelana Jaya Line at USJ 7 for trips into Kuala Lumpur. Taylor's lists SunMed BRT station as its nearby stop, plus its own shuttle buses. KTM Komuter also stops in Subang Jaya. Petaling Jaya is served by LRT and MRT lines, with feeder buses and e-hailing for the last stretch. Roads here are congested at peak hours, so live within walking or shuttle distance of your campus if you can.
Universities in Cyberjaya, Putrajaya and Shah Alam
Cyberjaya, Putrajaya and Shah Alam are planned cities in Selangor and the federal territory, quieter and generally cheaper to rent in than Kuala Lumpur or Subang Jaya. Universities in Cyberjaya include MMU and the University of Cyberjaya; Heriot-Watt is in neighbouring Putrajaya, about 25 km south of Kuala Lumpur; Xiamen University Malaysia is further south in Sepang; and Shah Alam, the Selangor state capital to the west, has UiTM and UOW Malaysia.

The overseas campus of Xiamen University in China. The university describes it as about 20 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and a few minutes from Salak Tinggi ERL station. It is at the southern edge of Greater Kuala Lumpur rather than in the Klang Valley proper.
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)

Getting around Cyberjaya, Putrajaya and Shah Alam
These cities were built around cars, so public transport is thinner than in Kuala Lumpur. Cyberjaya and Putrajaya are linked to the city by the MRT Putrajaya Line and by the airport rail link, with feeder buses and university shuttles covering the distance to campus. Shah Alam is on the KTM Komuter network. In all three, most students live within walking or shuttle distance of campus and use e-hailing for everything else. Ask each university which station its shuttle serves before you sign a tenancy.
Bangi, Serdang, Kajang and Semenyih: UKM, UPM, UTAR and Nottingham
The southern corridor of Selangor holds two of Malaysia's five public research universities and one of its best-known branch campuses. UKM is in Bangi, UPM is in Serdang, UTAR's Sungai Long campus is in Kajang, and the University of Nottingham Malaysia is in Semenyih, about 45 minutes by car from Kuala Lumpur. Expect large green campuses, lower rents than the city and a quieter student life.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
43600 UKM Bangi, Selangor · Public
The National University of Malaysia, ranked approx. 140–160 globally in QS. Indicative tuition is USD 3,000 to 6,500 a year for international undergraduates. Check the teaching language of your programme, because UKM uses more Malay than the other research universities.

The Malaysian campus of the University of Nottingham, which is ranked approx. 100 globally in QS. Strong in engineering, business, biosciences and psychology, at RM 45,000 to 65,000 a year. A self-contained campus in a semi-rural setting, where most students live on or near campus.
Getting around Bangi, Serdang, Kajang and Semenyih
The KTM Komuter line running south from Kuala Lumpur serves this corridor, the MRT Kajang Line ends at Kajang, and the MRT Putrajaya Line passes through the Serdang area. Campuses are large and set back from the stations, so university buses and e-hailing cover the last few kilometres. Nottingham runs a free shuttle for students and staff between the campus and the Kajang KTM and MRT station; the university gives the journey as approximately 45 minutes.
Cost of living in Kuala Lumpur for students
The cost of living in Kuala Lumpur for students is about USD 410 to 850 a month, or roughly USD 4,900 to 10,200 a year, covering accommodation, food, transport, utilities and personal spending for one student in shared housing or a hostel. Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are the most expensive region in Malaysia to live in, and still far below Singapore, Australia or the UK.
| Cost item | Range in Kuala Lumpur / Selangor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Living costs per month | USD 410 – 850 (≈ RM 1,700 – 3,500) | Shared housing or hostel. A private studio or a condominium in central Kuala Lumpur costs well above this. |
| Living costs per year | USD 4,900 – 10,200 | Twelve months at the monthly range above. |
| Tuition, public university in the Klang Valley | USD 3,000 – 7,000 / year | UM, UKM and UPM, international undergraduate rate. |
| Tuition, private university in the Klang Valley | RM 25,000 – 55,000 / year | From MMU and UOW Malaysia at the low end to Taylor's and UCSI at the high end. |
| Tuition, foreign branch campus | RM 45,000 – 75,000 / year | Monash Malaysia and Nottingham Malaysia. |

| Arrival setup | About USD 500 – 900 | Deposit, bedding, SIM card and a short stay in month one. |
| Typical all-in year, private university + shared housing | USD 10,000 – 14,000 | The mid-range budget in our cost guide, where most international students land. |
All figures are the indicative 2026 ranges from our cost and tuition guides. RM equivalents use about RM 4.1 to the US dollar (October 2026). Rent is the biggest variable: sharing a unit near campus in Bangi, Cyberjaya or Semenyih costs noticeably less than renting alone in central Kuala Lumpur, which is why the range is wide.

Kuala Lumpur vs Penang vs Johor: which city to study in
Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley give you the most universities and the best transport, for about USD 40 to 150 a month more in living costs than Penang or Johor. Choose Kuala Lumpur for choice and connections, Penang for USM and a smaller island city, and Johor for UTM and proximity to Singapore.
| Factor | Kuala Lumpur / Klang Valley | Penang | Johor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living costs per month | USD 410 – 850 | USD 370 – 700 | USD 370 – 720 |
| Living costs per year (est.) | USD 4,900 – 10,200 | USD 4,400 – 8,400 | USD 4,400 – 8,600 |
| Public research university | UM, UKM and UPM | Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) | Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai |
| Private universities and branch campuses | The widest choice in Malaysia: Taylor's, Sunway, Monash, UCSI, APU, MMU, Nottingham and more | A smaller choice, including a UOW Malaysia campus | A smaller choice; Monash Malaysia has a clinical school in Johor Bahru |
| Getting around | LRT, MRT, monorail, KTM Komuter and BRT, plus buses and e-hailing | Mainly buses and e-hailing | Mainly buses and e-hailing |
| Flights home | The widest international connections in the country | A smaller international airport | Next to Singapore |
If you have not chosen a university yet, start with the Klang Valley: it is where most options are, and you can change university or level later without moving city. If your course is at USM or UTM, the lower living cost of Penang or Johor is a bonus rather than a reason on its own.

Moving with younger children? International schools in Kuala Lumpur
Families relocating to the Klang Valley usually choose a school first and a home second, because traffic decides more than distance. How to apply to a university in Kuala Lumpur
To apply to a university in Kuala Lumpur you apply to the university itself, usually online, 3 to 4 months before the intake you want. Private universities and branch campuses take new students 2 to 5 times a year and normally reply within days to a few weeks; public universities run a main September/October intake and a smaller February/March one. The steps are the same across the Klang Valley.
- 1Shortlist three to five universities by area, field and budget using the table above, and check that your exact programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
- 2Check the entry requirements and English requirement for your qualification, and note the intake month and application deadline for each programme.
- 3Prepare your documents: passport, academic certificates and transcripts with certified English translations where needed, an English test result if required, and a passport photo.
- 4Submit the online application to each university, or upload your documents once on Sail Edu and reuse them across applications. Sail Edu is free for students and charges no agent fee.
- 5Accept the offer and pay the deposit the university asks for. The university then applies for your student visa through EMGS; allow a further 4 to 8 weeks for the Visa Approval Letter.
- 6Book accommodation near your campus or on a shuttle route, then fly in and complete medical screening and registration.
