QS positions are from the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 (published March 2026), as reported by the sources listed at the end of this page. "Band not verified" means we could not confirm the 2026 band from QS or the university, not that the university is unranked. Tuition is the indicative university-wide range for mainstream bachelor's programmes already published in our fee guides, not a computer science quote; public-university RM equivalents use about RM 4.1 to the US dollar. Fees change every intake: confirm the fee for your exact programme on the university's official fee page.

How we chose: methodology
This page is not our opinion presented as a ranking. A university is called "best" here only where a published third-party measure supports it, and every external claim links to its source at the end of the page. We used three kinds of evidence.
- Subject ranking: the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Computer Science and Information Systems table. We quote a position only where QS data was confirmed by the university's own announcement or by news reporting of the release. QS also publishes a separate Data Science and Artificial Intelligence table, linked in the sources.
- Accreditation: every programme taught in Malaysia must be accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and you can search the exact programme in the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR). For computing and technology degrees, the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) also accredits programmes, and MBOT states that it is a full signatory of the Seoul Accord, the international agreement on computing degrees.
- Breadth: the number and range of computing programmes each university lists on Sail Edu, from foundation and diploma to master's and PhD.
- What we did not use: acceptance rates, pass rates, employment percentages or paid placements. Malaysian universities do not publish comparable figures, so we leave them out.
- Order: the comparison table is grouped by university type, then by confirmed QS position. Rows without a confirmed band are not ranked against each other.

Artificial intelligence degree Malaysia, plus data science, cybersecurity, software engineering and IT
Seven of the nine universities above list a bachelor's degree with artificial intelligence in its title on Sail Edu. The cards below sort real programmes by specialism, so you can go straight to the degree title you searched for. A named specialism matters less than the modules, so compare the course structure before you choose.
Artificial intelligence (AI)
The best university for AI in Malaysia depends on whether you want a research route (UM, UTM) or a named AI degree with flexible entry (Sunway, UCSI, APU).
Data science
A data science degree in Malaysia is offered both as a named bachelor's degree and, more often, as a one-year-plus master's for graduates of any quantitative field.
Cybersecurity
A cyber security degree in Malaysia is usually a computer science degree with a security major. APU and UCSI name it in the degree title.
Software engineering
A software engineering degree in Malaysia is taught by both computing and engineering faculties. Check which faculty awards it and how it is accredited.
Information technology (IT)
A Bachelor of Information Technology in Malaysia is more applied than computer science and usually asks for less mathematics. It suits networking, systems and business-technology roles.
Diploma and foundation routes
A diploma takes about 2 to 2.5 years and can give advanced standing into year two of a related degree. A computing foundation takes about one year.
Computer science course fees in Malaysia
Computer science course fees in Malaysia run from about USD 3,000 to 5,500 a year at a public university and RM 30,000 to 50,000 a year at a private one, for an international undergraduate. Foreign branch campuses cost more, from about RM 45,000 a year. Computing is one of the cheaper fields to study in Malaysia, alongside business and arts.
| Route | Indicative tuition | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Public university, bachelor's in computer science or IT | USD 3,000 – 5,500 / year | International rate. Entry is competitive and intakes are fixed. |

| Diploma in IT (2 – 2.5 years) | RM 12,000 – 22,000 total | Lower-cost fields such as business and IT; can lead into year two of a degree. |
| Master's degree | RM 25,000 – 100,000 total | All fields; usually 1 to 2 years. Check the fee sheet for the exact computing programme. |
These are the indicative ranges already published in our cost and fee guides, not quotes for a specific programme. They exclude registration, exam and resource fees and living costs, which run about USD 410 to 850 a month in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Confirm the current fee for your exact programme on the university's official fee page before you apply.
To lower the cost, read Cheapest University in Malaysia 2026 and check scholarships listed on Sail Edu. Most private universities offer merit scholarships of 10 to 100% of tuition.
Computer science course requirements in Malaysia
Computer science course requirements in Malaysia start from the national minimum for a bachelor's degree: 2 STPM subjects at grade C (CGPA 2.00), 2 A-Level passes, 5 Bs in UEC, or a foundation or diploma CGPA of 2.00. Computing degrees then add a mathematics requirement, and top universities ask for far more than the minimum.
| Qualification | Common minimum for a bachelor's degree | What computing programmes typically add |
|---|---|---|
| SPM / O-Level / IGCSE | Not direct entry to a degree. Typically at least 5 credits for a foundation or diploma. | A credit in Mathematics is typically expected; Additional Mathematics helps for computer science and software engineering. |
| STPM | Grade C (CGPA 2.00) in at least 2 subjects | Top public universities prefer around 4As. A mathematics subject is typically expected. |
| UEC | Grade B in at least 5 subjects | Widely accepted by private universities and branch campuses; not generally accepted for UPUOnline entry to public universities. Mathematics is typically among the required subjects. |
| GCE A-Level | Passes in at least 2 subjects | AAA to A*AA for top universities and courses. Mathematics is typically required or preferred for computer science. |
| Foundation / Matriculation | CGPA 2.00 | A foundation in computing, science or engineering fits best. Check that it is accepted by the university you want to graduate from. |
| Diploma | CGPA 2.00 | A related diploma can give advanced standing into year two. Ask for the credit-transfer terms in writing. |
| English | IELTS 5.5 – 6.5 at most private universities; 6.0 – 7.0 at public universities | Other approved tests are accepted. Check which alternatives your university takes before you book a test. |
Minimums are the common national figures published in our application guide. The mathematics expectations are typical rather than universal: each university sets its own subject requirements, and computer science and software engineering usually ask for stronger mathematics than information technology. Read the requirement for your exact qualification on the programme page.
If you do not meet direct entry, see Foundation Programmes in Malaysia 2026 and, for families still choosing a pre-university route, international schools offering A-Level and IB.

Data science salaries in Malaysia
RM 4,000 – 6,500 / month
Fresh-graduate range. Experienced data scientists typically earn RM 9,000 to 20,000 a month; machine learning and AI roles sit at the top.
Salary ranges are the indicative 2026 figures from our graduate salaries guide. Actual pay depends on employer, city, skills and your internship record, and international graduates need a work pass to stay on after study.
How to choose between them
Choose on five things, in this order: whether you can get in, total cost to graduation, the degree you graduate with, the modules, and recognition at home. Ranking position comes after all five.
- 1Entry and intake. Public universities such as UM, UTM and UKM are the cheapest and best ranked, but entry is competitive, intakes are fixed and international undergraduate places are limited. Private universities run 3 or more intakes a year.
- 2Total cost. Multiply the annual fee by the programme length and add living costs for that city. A three-year degree at a higher annual fee can cost less than a four-year degree at a lower one.
- 3The award. Monash Malaysia and Nottingham Malaysia give you the Australian or UK degree. Some private universities also offer 3+0 degrees awarded by a UK or Australian partner.
- 4The modules. Compare year-two and year-three modules, the amount of mathematics, the industry placement and the final-year project, not just the degree title. A named AI degree and a computer science degree with AI electives can be very similar.
- 5Accreditation and recognition. Search the exact programme in the Malaysian Qualifications Register, check whether it appears on MBOT's accredited list if Seoul Accord recognition matters to you, and confirm recognition in the country where you plan to work.
How to apply
International students apply directly to each university, about 2 to 4 months before the intake, and then allow a further 4 to 8 weeks for the EMGS student visa. Private universities admit on a rolling basis; public universities have 2 intakes a year.
- 1Shortlist 3 to 5 programmes. Use the comparison table and the programme links above, and mix one ambitious choice with realistic ones.
- 2Check the entry and English requirements for your exact qualification, including the mathematics requirement.
- 3Prepare documents: transcripts, certificates, passport, photo and English result, with certified translations where needed.
- 4Apply online. You can submit to several universities for free on Sail Edu, with a document vault to track each application.
- 5Accept an offer and start the visa. The university submits your EMGS application once you accept and pay the required fees.
