Sail Edu · 2026 Guide
Best University in Malaysia for Psychology 2026: QS & Fees
The best university in Malaysia for psychology depends on what you measure. By the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, only two Malaysian universities are ranked for psychology: Universiti Malaya (151-200) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (251-300). For an internationally accredited psychology degree in Malaysia taught fully in English, the usual shortlist is Monash University Malaysia, the University of Nottingham Malaysia, Sunway, Taylor's, UCSI, Heriot-Watt and UTAR. This guide from Sail Edu (SailEdu) compares nine universities on evidence, then explains fees, entry requirements and what it really takes to become a psychologist or counsellor.
Quick answer
By QS Subject 2026, Universiti Malaya (151-200) and UKM (251-300) are the only Malaysian universities ranked for psychology. For accredited English-medium degrees, shortlist Nottingham Malaysia (BPS-accredited), Monash Malaysia, Sunway and Taylor's. A bachelor's degree alone does not make you a clinical psychologist: that needs a master's in clinical psychology and MAHPC registration.

Two Malaysian universities appear in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for psychology: Universiti Malaya in the 151-200 band and UKM in the 251-300 band, out of 356 universities ranked worldwide. No Malaysian private university or branch campus is ranked separately, so for those the table shows the parent university's rank (where one exists) and the accreditation each university publishes. Rows are ordered by QS subject band first, then alphabetically by group; the order below the two ranked universities is not a ranking.

QS bands are from the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 (published 25 March 2026). "Not ranked" means the institution does not appear in the 356-row psychology table; it is not a judgement on quality. Fees marked "university range" or "field range" are the indicative ranges used across our guides, not psychology-specific fees. Fees for Nottingham, Sunway and Heriot-Watt are from each university's own programme page and exclude registration and resource fees and tax. Confirm the current fee on the official page before you apply.

How we chose: methodology
This page does not rank universities by our own opinion. It reports what independent bodies and the universities themselves publish, and says so when something could not be verified.
- Subject ranking: the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for psychology, the latest edition available in October 2026. We read the full 356-row table and recorded every Malaysian entry. There are two.
- Branch campuses: QS ranks Monash University and the University of Nottingham as whole institutions. Their Malaysian campuses are not ranked separately, so the parent rank is shown for context only.
- Accreditation: the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) accredits every programme; professional recognition (BPS, APAC) and regulator standards (MAHPC for clinical psychology, Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia for counselling) are taken from the university or regulator.
- Inclusion: we featured universities that have a live page and listed psychology or counselling programmes on Sail Edu. HELP University and IMU University also run well-known psychology programmes but are outside this comparison.
- Fees: reused from our fee guides unless a university publishes a programme-specific figure, in which case the source is listed below.
Sail Edu is a free comparison and application platform. No university paid to appear on this page, and the order of unranked universities carries no meaning.

How to become a psychologist in Malaysia: clinical psychology and counselling
A bachelor's degree in psychology does not qualify you as a clinical psychologist in Malaysia. The realistic route is about six years: a three to four year psychology degree, then a two-year master's in clinical psychology, then registration with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council. Counselling is a separate profession with its own law and its own board.
- 1
Complete an accredited psychology degree
Study a three to four year bachelor's degree in psychology that is accredited by MQA. This gives you the academic foundation and research training, but no professional title.
- 2
Decide between clinical psychology and counselling
Clinical psychology focuses on assessing and treating mental health conditions and is regulated as an allied health profession. Counselling is regulated separately and can be entered through a recognised counselling degree at bachelor's or master's level.
- 3
Complete the professional qualification
For clinical psychology, complete a master's in clinical psychology. As an example, Taylor's University asks for a psychology degree with a CGPA of at least 2.75 and requires a minimum of 1,200 practicum hours over two years. For counselling, complete a counselling qualification recognised by Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia, including its supervised practicum.
- 4
Register with the regulator
Clinical psychologists register with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC) under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016 (Act 774) and hold a practising certificate. Counsellors register with Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia under the Counsellors Act 1998 (Act 580) and hold a practising certificate.
- 5
Keep your registration current
Both regulators require a valid practising certificate to keep working. Check renewal periods and continuing professional development requirements directly with the regulator.
| Role | Law and regulator | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical psychologist | Allied Health Professions Act 2016 (Act 774); Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC), under the Ministry of Health | A psychology degree plus a master's in clinical psychology that meets MAHPC standards, then registration and a practising certificate. The council extended its registration transition period to 31 December 2026; after that, practising without registration and a valid certificate is an offence. |
| Registered counsellor | Counsellors Act 1998 (Act 580); Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (Board of Counsellors) | A counselling qualification listed by the board, registration and a practising certificate. Section 24 of the Act limits full registration to Malaysian citizens and permanent residents aged 21 or over; section 27 provides temporary registration for non-citizens. Practising or using the title without registration carries a fine of up to RM 30,000, up to three years in prison, or both. |
| Other psychology roles (industrial and organisational, educational, research, HR) | No single statutory register that we could verify | Usually a psychology degree, often with a relevant master's. Employers set their own requirements. Do not describe yourself as a clinical psychologist or registered counsellor without the registration above. |
International students: check recognition at home before you enrol
Malaysian registration lets you practise in Malaysia; it does not transfer automatically to any other country. Counsellor registration is written around citizens and permanent residents. If you plan to practise at home, ask your home regulator which degrees and how many supervised hours it accepts, and get the answer in writing before paying a deposit. Rules change, so confirm the current position with MAHPC and Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia rather than relying on this summary.
Psychology degree Malaysia: diploma, degree and master's fees
A psychology degree in Malaysia costs from about USD 3,000 a year at a public university and about RM 25,000 to 45,000 a year at most private universities, with foreign branch campuses at RM 45,000 and above. A diploma in psychology is the cheapest way in, and a master's in clinical psychology is the most expensive step.
| Level | Typical length | Indicative tuition | What it leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diploma in psychology | 2 – 2.5 years | RM 12,000 – 35,000 for the whole diploma (general diploma range) | Entry-level support roles, or advanced standing into a psychology degree. Not a professional qualification. |
| Bachelor's degree (BSc / BA / Bachelor of Psychology) | 3 – 4 years | Public: from about USD 3,000 a year. Private: RM 25,000 – 45,000 a year. Branch campus: RM 45,000 and above | Graduate roles in HR, research, marketing, education and social services, or entry to a master's. |
| Master's in psychology (research or coursework) | 1 – 2 years | Varies widely; confirm with the university | Specialist roles, such as industrial and organisational psychology, and a route to a PhD. |
| Master of Clinical Psychology | 2 years full-time | Example: Taylor's lists RM 62,960 (Malaysian) and USD 22,839 (international) for the programme | Eligibility to apply for MAHPC registration as a clinical psychologist, if the programme meets the council's standards. |
| Master of Counselling | About 2 years | Varies; confirm with the university | Eligibility to apply to Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia, if the programme is recognised by the board. |
Diploma, public and private ranges are the indicative figures used across our fee guides and cover tuition only. The Taylor's figure is from its programme page in October 2026. Places on clinical master's programmes are limited and selection usually includes an interview.
To keep the cost down, read Cheapest University in Malaysia 2026 and check the scholarships listed on Sail Edu.
Psychology degree entry requirements in Malaysia
Most psychology degrees in Malaysia ask for two things: a pre-university qualification at roughly the national minimum, and credits in Mathematics and one Science subject at SPM or O-Level, with a pass in English. Branch campuses and higher-demand universities ask for more. The table gives the typical floor and published examples.
| Qualification | Typical minimum | Published examples (2026 to 2027 entry) |
|---|---|---|
| SPM / O-Level / IGCSE | Not enough for a degree on its own. Opens a foundation or diploma, typically with five credits for foundation or three for a diploma. | Sunway, Nottingham and Heriot-Watt all ask for a credit or grade C in Mathematics and a Science subject at this level. |
| STPM | Two subjects at grade C (CGPA 2.00) | Heriot-Watt: GPA 2.00. Sunway: CGPA 2.33. Nottingham: BC+C+. |
| A-Level | Two passes | Sunway: 12 points. Heriot-Watt: CCC. Nottingham: BCC. |
| UEC | Five Bs | Sunway: maximum 26 points from five subjects, including Mathematics and a Science. Heriot-Watt: 20 points or fewer. Nottingham: three B3s and two B4s. |
| Foundation / matriculation / diploma | CGPA 2.00 | Nottingham and Heriot-Watt: foundation with GPA or CGPA 3.0. |
| IB Diploma | About 24 to 26 points | Nottingham: 24. Sunway and Heriot-Watt: 25. |
| English | IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 at private universities | Sunway: IELTS 6.0. Nottingham: IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component. |
Typical minimums follow the general thresholds in our application guide; each university sets its own, and competitive programmes ask for far more. International students whose school system is not listed should ask the admissions office for an equivalence check, and most can enter through a one-year foundation instead.
Careers after a degree in psychology in Malaysia
Most psychology graduates do not become clinicians. A degree in psychology in Malaysia leads mainly into human resources, market and user research, education, social services and communications, while the protected clinical and counselling titles need the extra qualifications described above. We do not publish a psychology salary figure because we could not verify one from a primary source.
Human resources and people analytics
Recruitment, training, employee wellbeing and organisational development. A master's in industrial and organisational psychology deepens this route.
Market, consumer and user research
Research design, surveys and behavioural insight for agencies, banks and technology companies. Statistics and research methods from your degree are the selling point.
Education and child development
Learning support, special-needs services and early-childhood settings. Teaching in schools normally needs a separate education qualification.
Clinical psychology and counselling
Hospitals, private practice, universities and NGOs, once you hold the professional master's and the registration. Budget the full six years, not three.
For pay across other fields see Graduate Salaries in Malaysia 2026, and for the HR and management route see business and management careers and salaries.
Closely related social science courses include mass communication and media, for example Bachelor of Mass Communication (Honours) at Taylor's and the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Media Communications at UKM.
How to choose
Start from the job you want and work backwards: the right psychology course in Malaysia for a future clinical psychologist is not the same as for someone heading into HR. Run these six checks before you shortlist.
- 1Decide whether you want a protected title. If you want to be a clinical psychologist or registered counsellor, choose a university with the professional master's on campus, or one whose degree is accepted for entry to it elsewhere.
- 2Check accreditation for where you will work. MQA accreditation covers Malaysia. BPS or APAC accreditation matters only if you plan further training in the UK or Australia. Chinese students should also confirm the university on the Ministry of Education list at jsj.moe.gov.cn.
- 3Look at the degree type. A BSc usually carries more statistics, biological psychology and lab work; a BA or social sciences degree leans toward social and applied topics. Read the module list rather than the title.
- 4Ask about research and placement. A final-year research project and a supervised placement are what master's admission panels look for.
- 5Compare total cost to graduation, including the master's if you need one. Three years at a branch campus plus a two-year clinical master's is a very different budget from a public-university degree.
- 6Confirm the teaching language and the intake. Public universities may teach some courses in Malay and have fewer intakes; private universities usually offer two or three intakes a year in English.
How to apply
International students apply directly to each university or through a free platform such as Sail Edu, usually three to six months before the intake. Private universities typically open in January or February, April or May, and August or September; public universities have fewer, fixed intakes.
- 1Shortlist three to five universities across price bands, using the comparison table above.
- 2Check the entry requirements for your own qualification on each programme page and prepare transcripts, certificates, passport and an English test result.
- 3Submit your applications. On Sail Edu you can apply online, store documents in one vault and ask the AI advisor questions in English or Chinese, with no agent fee.
- 4Accept an offer, pay the deposit the university specifies, and let the university start your EMGS student-visa application.
- 5Arrange accommodation and insurance, then travel once your visa approval letter is issued.
Step-by-step detail is in How to Apply to a University in Malaysia 2026, Malaysia University Intake Dates 2026 and Malaysia Student Visa (EMGS) 2026.

Typically two STPM subjects at grade C, two A-Level passes, five Bs in UEC or a foundation with CGPA 2.00, plus credits in Mathematics and a Science subject at SPM or O-Level and a pass in English. Stronger universities ask for more: Nottingham Malaysia asks for BCC at A-Level and IELTS 6.5.
Is a BSc Psychology in Malaysia enough to become a psychologist?
No. A BSc Psychology gives you the academic foundation only. To be a clinical psychologist you also need a master's in clinical psychology that meets Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council standards, then registration under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016. Plan on about six years in total.
How do I become a clinical psychologist in Malaysia?
Complete a psychology bachelor's degree, then a two-year master's in clinical psychology with supervised practicum (Taylor's, for example, requires at least 1,200 hours), then register with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council and hold a practising certificate. The council's registration transition period runs to 31 December 2026.
Can I study a diploma in psychology in Malaysia?
Yes. A diploma in psychology takes about two to two and a half years after SPM or O-Level, typically with three credits, and general diploma tuition runs RM 12,000 to 35,000 in total. APU and SEGi list psychology diplomas on Sail Edu. A diploma can give advanced standing into a degree but is not a professional qualification.
Where can I study a master's in psychology in Malaysia?
Master's options listed on Sail Edu include clinical psychology at Monash Malaysia, Taylor's and UCSI, an MSc in Psychology at Sunway, organisational psychology at Nottingham Malaysia, UKM and UTAR, and counselling at Universiti Malaya, Monash, Sunway and Taylor's. Clinical programmes usually need a psychology degree and an interview.
Can I do a counselling degree in Malaysia and register as a counsellor?
Counsellors are regulated by Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia under the Counsellors Act 1998. You need a qualification the board recognises, registration and a practising certificate. The Act limits full registration to Malaysian citizens and permanent residents aged 21 or over, with temporary registration possible for non-citizens, so international students should check with the board first.
